What is piling?
Piling involves driving long, narrow elements, called piles, into the ground to support loads from the structure above. The method is used primarily where the upper soil layers are loose or prone to settlement, for example in clay or fill. The piles can either support through tip resistance, where the load is transferred down to a solid layer or rock, or through shell friction against the surrounding soil.
